Objective:
In this academic project I created a logo for the launch of Pelican Swim Company (an imagined business). I was also tasked with creating, stationary, PR materials, and merchandise mockups. Pelican Swim Co. produces size-inclusive & functional athletic swimwear made to fit everyBODY.
Process
Problem: Pelican Swim Co. is a size inclusive and functional athletic swimwear company that needed a logo and design of PR materials for company launch.
Insights: The motto “Dive Right In” means customers should be able focus on having fun, not worry about if their swimsuit is going to stay on in the water. They pride themselves in offering sizes that will fit a wide variety of body types.
Solution: A fun & classic looking logo was created that works well at different sizes and in color as well as black and white. This logo was then incorporated into the design of a number of PR materials, including business cards, stationary, brochure, media folder, & merchandise mockups.
Logo Process:
The process began with some sketches of pelicans, first on paper then digitally with Adobe Illustrator. The pelican is such an expressive bird, so there were multiple directions to go in that would capture the essence of a fun swimsuit brand.
Final Logo & Style Guide:
The final logo design landed on a classic circular logo with a smiling pelican mascot that brings a lot of character to the brand. The color palette draws from the colors of the sea and the logo is simple and versatile. It embodies a timeless feel with a likeable mascot that would be easy to incorporate into merchandise.
Stationary Development:
The next task was to incorporate the logo into stationary: business cards, a press release letterhead, and an envelope. I played with different patterns and colors to create something that felt both fun and professional.
Brochure Development:
I created multiple design ideas for the brochure layout, looking for the best way to highlight the product & tell the story of the company. These roughs contained photos that were not royalty free, so the teacher encouraged me to work with different images. The final brochure design effectively highlighted the surf brand lifestyle, incorporated pelican images, and sold the slogan "Dive Right In!"
Folder Development:
The folder design needed to be eye catching and fun. I experimented with multiple ideas that would help tell the story of Pelican Swim Co. The final design for the folder illustration was a celebration of different body types in the swimsuits, incorporating the fun pattern used in the stationary and some eye catching color blocking.
Reflection:
In this project I was able to create a fun and functional logo and cohesive PR materials to be used for the company launch. While it was difficult to nail down the best illustration and overall vibe for the logo design, the final product found a good blend of whimsy and classic shapes that would hopefully give authenticity and longevity to the brand. The incorporation of funky patterns and bold colors into the PR materials helped to tell the story of a fun swimsuit brand for surfers and swimmers alike.
